Advocate with the Father

I feel when I have sinned an immediate reluctance to go to Christ. I am ashamed to go. I feel as if it would not do to go, as if it were making Christ the minister of sin, to go straight from the swine-trough to the best robe, and a thousand other excuses. But I am persuaded they are all lies direct from hell.

John argues the opposite way—‘If any man sins, we have an advocate with the Father.’ The holy sensitiveness of the soul that shrinks from the touch of sin, the acute susceptibility of the conscience at the slightest shade of guilt, will of necessity draw the spiritual mind frequently to the blood of Jesus. And herein lies the secret of a heavenly walk. Acquaint yourself with it, my reader, as the most precious secret of your life. He who lives in the habit of a prompt and minute acknowledgement of sin, with his eye reposing calmly, believingly, upon the crucified Redeemer, soars in spirit where the eagle’s pinion [wings] range not.

The Glory of Heaven

If the mountains were gold; if every sand in the sea were a diamond; if the whole globe were a shining gem—it would all still be infinitely beneath the glory of heaven!

1. In heaven, there shall be freedom from sin. Here on earth, sin keeps house with us; it is as natural for us to sin—as to breathe. The soul that is most purified, and cleansed by grace, is not without some dregs of corruption. But a sinful thought shall not creep into heaven! There is beauty—which is not stained with lust; and honor—which is not swelled with pride. "Nothing impure will ever enter it!" Revelation 21:27

2. In heaven, there shall be freedom from the assaults of the red dragon. It is sad to have Satan daily soliciting us by his temptations—and laboring to trick us into sin. But the old serpent is forever cast out of the heavenly Paradise!

3. In heaven, there shall be freedom from all afflictions. Our lives now are intertwined with troubles. "My life is consumed by anguish, and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak." Psalm 31:10. There are many things to occasion trouble—sometimes poverty afflicts; sometimes sickness tortures; sometimes the unkindness of friends breaks the heart. Our lives, like the seas, are full of tempests. But in the kingdom of Heaven, there is nothing to give grief. There, all is serene and calm; there is nothing within to trouble us—or without to molest us.

4. The delights of the heavenly kingdom are unmixed. The comforts here below, are checkered. Honor may be stained with disgrace; joy interwoven with sorrow. Our suns are mixed with clouds. But the delicacies of heaven are pure as well as pleasant. There is honey—which has not one drop of gall. The crystal spring of joy, has no settlings of sorrow at the bottom. The rose in that paradise—is without prickles; the sun in that horizon—is without eclipse.

This glorious kingdom, will make amends for all our labor and pains!

God is Our Reward

"I am your exceeding great reward." Genesis 15:1

God Himself is His people's reward! God is a satisfying reward. God is a whole ocean of blessedness, so that the soul, while it is bathing in it, cries out in a divine ecstasy, "I have enough!" Here is fullness—but no excess. Psalm 17:15, "I shall be satisfied when I awake with Your likeness." That is—when I awake out of the sleep of death, having my soul embellished with the illustrious beams of Your glory—I shall be satisfied. In God there is not only sufficiency—but redundancy; not only the fullness of the vessel—but the fullness of the fountain! In God, this Ark of blessedness, are all good things to be found. Therefore Jacob, having God for his reward, could say, "I have enough!" or, as it is in the original, "I have all!" Genesis 33:11. God is all marrow and fatness. He is such an plenteous reward as exceeds our very faith. If the Queen of Sheba's heart fainted when she saw all King Solomon's glory—what would it have done to have beheld the astonishing and magnificent reward which God bestows upon His favorites!

God is a Pleasant Reward

God is a pleasant reward. He is the quintessence of delight! He is all beauty and love! To be feeding upon thoughts of God is delicious. Psalm 104:34, "My meditation on Him shall be sweet." It is delightful to the bee to suck the flower. Just so, by holy musing, to suck out some of the sweetness in God, carries a secret delight in it. To have a prospect of God only by faith is pleasant. 1 Peter 1:8, "In whom believing you rejoice." Then what will the joy of vision be—when we shall have a clear, personal sight of Him—and be laid in the bosom of divine love! What a delicious reward will God be in heaven! This will be better felt—than expressed. The godly, entering upon their celestial reward, are said to enter into the joy of their Lord, Matthew 25:21. Oh, amazing! The saints enter into God's own joy! They have not only the joy which God bestows—but the joy which God enjoys!

Our Everlasting Reward

God is an everlasting reward. Mortality is the flaw of all earthly things. But God is an eternal reward. Eternity cannot be measured by years nor ages. Eternity makes glory, weighty. Psalm 48:14, "This God is our God forever and ever!" Oh, saints of God, your praying and repenting are but for a while—but your reward is forever! As long as God is God, He will be rewarding you! Hosea 2:19, "I will betroth you unto me forever." God marries Himself to His people, and this admits of no divorce. God's love for His elect is as unchangeable as His love for Christ! Psalm 73:26, "My portion forever." This portion cannot be spent—because it is infinite; nor can it be lost—because it is eternal.

In God are treasures which can never be emptied—and pleasures which can never be ended!

"You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand!" Psalm 16:11

Look to Jesus

“Looking unto Jesus.” Hebrews 12:2

It is ever the Holy Spirit’s work to turn our eyes away from self to Jesus; but Satan’s work is just the opposite of this, for he is constantly trying to make us regard ourselves instead of Christ. He insinuates, “Your sins are too great for pardon; you have no faith; you do not repent enough; you will never be able to continue to the end; you have not the joy of His children; you have such a wavering hold of Jesus.” All these are thoughts about self, and we shall never find comfort or assurance by looking within. But the Holy Spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self: He tells us that we are nothing, but that “Christ is all in all.” Remember, therefore, it is not thy hold of Christ that saves thee-it is Christ; it is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee-it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument-it is Christ’s blood and merits; therefore, look not so much to thy hand with which thou art grasping Christ, as to Christ; look not to thy hope, but to Jesus, the source of thy hope; look not to thy faith, but to Jesus, the author and finisher of thy faith. We shall never find happiness by looking at our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives rest to the soul. If we would at once overcome Satan and have peace with God, it must be by “looking unto Jesus.” Keep thine eye simply on Him; let His death, His sufferings, His merits, His glories, His intercession, be fresh upon thy mind; when thou wakest in the morning look to Him; when thou liest down at night look to Him. Oh! let not thy hopes or fears come between thee and Jesus; follow hard after Him, and He will never fail thee.

Beholding Jesus Now and Then‏

The heart of a believer affected with the glory of Christ, is like the needle touched with the loadstone. It can no longer be quiet, no longer be satisfied in a distance from him. It is put into a continual motion towards him. This motion, indeed, is weak and tremulous. Pantings, breathing, sighings, groanings in prayer, in meditations, in the secret recesses of our minds, are the life of it. However, it is continually pressing towards him. But it obtains not its point, it comes not to its centre and rest, in this world.

But now above, all things are clear and serene, — all plain and evident in our beholding the glory of Christ, — we shall be ever with him, and see him as he is. This is heaven, this is blessedness, this is eternal rest.

The person of Christ in all his glory shall be continually before us; and the eyes of our understandings shall be so gloriously illuminated, as that we shall be able steadily to behold and comprehend that glory.

But, alas! here at present our minds recoil, our meditations fail, our hearts are overcome, our thoughts confused, and our eyes turn aside from the lustre of this glory; nor can we abide in the contemplation of it. But there, an immediate, constant view of it, will bring in everlasting refreshment and joy unto our whole souls.

God, Our Chosen Portion‏

Hence we may learn, that whatever changes a godly man passes through, he is happy; because God, who is unchangeable, is his chosen portion. Though he meet with temporal losses, and be deprived of many, yea, of all his temporal enjoyments; yet God, whom he prefers before all, still remains, and cannot be lost. While he stays in this changeable, troublesome world, he is happy; because his chosen portion, on which he builds as his main foundation for happiness, is above the world, and above all changes. And when he goes into another world, still he is happy, because that portion yet remains. Whatever he be deprived of, he cannot be deprived of his chief portion; his inheritance remains sure to him.—Could worldly-minded men find out a way to secure to themselves those earthly enjoyments on which they mainly set their hearts, so that they could not be lost nor impaired while they live, how great would they account the privilege, though other things which they esteem in a less degree, were liable to the same uncertainty as they now are! Whereas now, those earthly enjoyments, on which men chiefly set their hearts, are often most fading. But how great is the happiness of those who have chosen the Fountain of all good, who prefer him before all things in heaven or on earth, and who can never be deprived of him to all eternity!

Come and Dine‏

"Jesus said unto them, Come and dine." - John 21:12

In these words, the believer is invited to a holy nearness to Jesus. "Come and dine" implies the same table and the same meat; sometimes it means to sit side by side and lean our head upon the Savior's bosom. It is being brought into the banqueting house, where waves the banner of redeeming love. "Come and dine" gives us a vision of union with Jesus because the only food we can feast upon when we dine with Jesus is Himself. Oh, what union is this! It is a depth which reason cannot fathom, that we thus feed upon Jesus. "He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me and I in him."

It is also an invitation to enjoy fellowship with the saints. Christians may differ on a variety of points, but they have all one spiritual appetite; if we cannot all feel alike, we can all still feed alike on the bread of life sent down from heaven. At the table of fellowship with Jesus we are one bread and one cup. As the loving cup goes round, we pledge one another heartily therein. Get nearer to Jesus and you will find yourself linked more and more in spirit to all who are supported by the same heavenly manna. If we were more near to Jesus, we should be more near to one another.

We likewise see in the words the source of strength for every Christian. To look at Christ is to live, but for strength to serve him you must "come and dine." We labor under much unnecessary weakness on account of neglecting this precept of the Master. None of us need to put ourselves on a low diet. On the contrary, we should fatten on the marrow and fatness of the gospel that we may accumulate strength therein, and urge every power to its full tension in the Master's service. So if you would realize nearness to Jesus, union with Jesus, love to his people and strength from him, then "come and dine" with him by faith.

Dear Brother,

Blessed be God for the news of a better world, where there will be no sin, trouble, nor defect forever!

What shall it be when the Lord shall call us up to join with those who are now singing before the eternal throne?

What shall it be when all the children of God, who in different ages and countries have been scattered abroad shall be all gathered together, and enter into that glorious and eternal rest provided for them?

What shall it be when there shall not be one trace of sin or sorrow remaining, not one discordant note to be heard, nothing to disturb, defile, or alleviate the never-ceasing joy?

Many a weary step we have taken, since the Lord first drew us to Himself; but we shall not have to tread the past way over again. Some difficulties may remain, but we know not how few. Perhaps before we are aware, the Lord may cut short our conflict and say, "Come up hither!" At the most, it cannot be very long! He who has been with us thus far will be with us to the end. He knows how to cause our consolations to exceed our greatest afflictions!

And when we get safely home, we shall not complain that we have suffered too much along the way. We shall not say, "Is this all I get after so much trouble?" No! When we awake in that glorious world, we shall in an instant be satisfied with His likeness. One sight of Jesus as He is will fill our hearts, and dry up all our tears!

For the Despairing Soul‏

Manasseh is saved. O despairing souls, the arms of mercy are open to receive a Manasseh, a monster, a devil incarnate; he caused that gospel prophet Isaiah to be sawed in the midst with a saw.... He turned aside from the Lord to commit idolatry, and caused his sons to pass through the fire, and dealt with familiar spirits, and made the streets of Jerusalem to overflow with innocent blood.... The soul of Mary Magdalene was full of devils; and yet Christ cast them out, and made her heart his house.... Why dost thou then say there is no hope for thee, O despairing soul?

Paul was full of rage against Christ and his people, and full of blasphemy and impiety, and yet behold, Paul is a chosen vessel, Paul is caught up into the heaven, and he is filled with the gifts and graces of the Holy Spirit .... Why should thou then say there is for thee no help, O despairing soul!

The apostle tells you of some monstrous miscreants that were unrighteous, fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate, abusers of themselves with mankind, thieves, covetous, drunkards, revilers, extortioners; and yet these monsters of mankind, through the infinite goodness and free grace of God, are washed from the filth and guilt of their sins, and justified by the righteousness of Christ, and sanctified by the Spirit of Christ, and decked and adorned with the precious graces of Christ ... Why then, O despairing soul, shouldst thou fear that thy unworthiness and unfitness for mercy will so stop and turn the stream of mercy, as that thou must perish eternally for want of one drop of special grace and mercy?

The Loving Heart of an Actual Living Christ!‏

I am afraid that many Christians in our day, have lost sight of Christ. They talk more about salvation than about their only Savior, more about redemption than the one true Redeemer, and more about Christ's work than Christ Himself!

This is a great fault — one that accounts for the dry and shriveled spirit that infuses the religious lives of many who profess faith.

As ever you would grow in grace, and have joy and peace in believing — beware of falling into this error! Cease to regard the Gospel as a mere collection of dry doctrines. Look at it rather as the revelation of a mighty living Being in whose sight you are daily to live. Cease to regard the Gospel as a mere set of abstract propositions and abstruse principles and rules. Look at it as the introduction to a glorious personal Friend. This is the kind of Gospel that the apostles preached. They did not go about the world telling men of love and mercy and pardon in the abstract. The leading subject of all their sermons, was the loving heart of an actual living Christ!

This is the kind of Gospel which is most calculated to promote sanctification and fitness for glory. Nothing, surely, is so likely to prepare us for that Heaven where Christ's personal presence will be all, and that glory where we shall meet Christ face to face — as to realize communion with Christ, as an actual living Person. There is all the difference in the world, between an idea and a person.

Den overdenkingen des levens

Roer de uitverkiezing niet aan voordat Christus aan de mensen voorgesteld is.

Genesis 1, 2 en 3 zorgen voor de grootste vragen die de mensheid doorworstelt, zonder ook maar een glimp van een geheel deugdelijk antwoord te krijgen.

Er bestaat maar één waarachtig doel van ons bestaan. Wij kennen er twee. Eén is waar, de ander is vals. Genesis 11:1-9 verhaalt van de torenbouw van Babel, waarbij de mens een naam voor zichzelf wil maken. Sinds de zondeval menen wij dat het doel van ons bestaan niets meer en niets minder inhoudt, dan het maken van naam en faam. Het is om van te schrikken hoeveel zaken in deze gevallen wereld gangbaar zijn en geen werkelijkheid zouden zijn geworden als de zondeval nooit zou hebben plaatsgevonden. Wij zijn ten leven geschapen om Gods Naam te verheerlijken, nooit om onze eigen naam glans te geven. Dit is ons probleem. Wilt u weten waarom de wereld een puinhoop is, waar ongerechtigheid woont en de leugen regeert? Hierom! Het zal van kwaad tot erger worden. Geen politiek dossier kan ervoor zorgen dat de wereldproblematiek opgelost zal worden. De mens zal in moeten zien dat hij niet omwille van zichzelf hier op deze planeet is geplaatst, maar omwille van Hem Die het Leven Zelf ís. Wat deze wereld nodig heeft, zijn mensen die niets meer voor zichzelf willen nastreven en die hun naam uitsluitend willen verbinden aan die van Jezus Christus.

Voor de zondeval hadden Adam en Eva in de Hof van Eden geen besef van het verschil tussen goed en kwaad. Zij hadden kennis van God en dat was genoeg.

Veel mensen stellen de 'waarom-vraag' naar het lijden in de wereld, maar hoeveel mensen stellen de 'waarom-vraag' naar het lijden van Christus? (Mat. 27:46)

Ik zou mensen graag ertoe bewegen om het boek Job te lezen. De in Gods ogen vrome man lijdt verlies van bezit en wordt fysiek gekweld. God antwoordt Job, maar gaat niet in op de achtergrond van diens lijden. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat God in Zijn antwoord laat zien: Ik ben dé IK BEN, Ik ben God; buiten Mij is geen ander. Job moet zijn hand voor de mond slaan en de antwoorden schuldig blijven. In de essentie komt hierop neer: met Zijn antwoord wil God aan Job tonen dat Hij God ís, dat er één Iemand is, Wiens raadsbesluit uitgevoerd zal worden, en om dat te erkennen. Dit is géén berustingstheologie, maar een waarlijk vertrouwen dat God over alles regeert.

Pieker niet over de vraag of Christus wel of niet voor JOU gestorven is. Als de Bijbel met klem gebiedt: 'Geloof in de Here Jezus Christus en gij zult zalig worden', gehoorzaam dan!

Christus is gekomen om een volk voor Zichzelf te verzamelen, dat God verheerlijkt; het was nooit Zijn intentie om een sociaal-maatschappelijk programma voor wereldvrede op te zetten.

Het wordt gevaarlijk als we de ratio en empirie betrouwbaarder achten dan Gods getuigenis.

Volhardende onwil zal altijd leiden tot onmacht. Structureel niet willen geloven zal leiden tot het niet kunnen geloven.

Ik zit niet te wachten op een Jezus in de rol van Boeddha; ik zit niet te wachten op een mediterende Jezus bovenop een berg; ik zit niet te wachten op een Jezus die Zichzelf probeert leeg te maken en Zich wil onthechten aan zaken die in dit leven aan Hem kleven; ik zit niet te wachten op een Jezus die op de mensen afstapt en zegt: 'Het is al goed met u'. Geef mij de Christus die God bekend heeft gemaakt, aan het kruis is gestorven voor de zonden der wereld en die radicale bekering en navolging vraagt, dan zal ik met vreugde en vertrouwen door de poorten van het Nieuwe Jeruzalem gaan!

'Ik weet niet of Jezus de Zoon van God is...' Ga uw binnenkamer in, lees de Schriften, bid, maak aantekeningen, doordenk, doorleef en pak de deurklink niet eerder vast dan het moment dat God door Zijn Heilige Geest uw twijfel heeft weggenomen!

Mensen zijn meesters in het creëren van afgoden; daarmee verlagen zij zich. Ze buigen voor zelfgemaakt goud en zilver. Onze generatie buigt zich neder voor de economie. We hebben het beeld groter gemaakt, opgepoetst, aangekleed, vormgegeven en uiteindelijk op een levensgroot sokkel geplaatst, waarvan hij nu dreigt te vallen en schade zal lijden. Alles wat de mens nu doet, is het krampachtig proberen het beeld overeind te houden en te kijken welke mogelijkheden er zijn om het systeem draaiende te houden. Kijk goed: als het met de afgod slecht gaat en niet meer op kan brengen wat de mens van hem verlangt, gaat het eveneens slecht met de hen die zich daar honderd procent afhankelijk van hebben gemaakt.

Wie in zonde geboren is, zal eenmaal sterven; wie in zonde sterft zal voor eeuwig deel hebben aan de tweede dood.

De term 'christen' behoeft dringend een herdefiniëring op twee vlakken: de leerstellige en de praktische. Het is ronduit belachelijk te zeggen dat de christenen uit de eerste eeuw niet geloofden dat Jezus de Messias is. Iemand die dit niet gelooft - je kan hem veel titels toeschrijven, maar een christen is het zeker níet. En praktisch gezien is het onmogelijk dat iemand, die bewust in een levensstijl van zonde blijft leven, het etiket 'christen' opgedrukt krijgt. Je bent of een afgodendienaar, of een Godsdienaar, maar niet allebei.

Lees Jesaja 4 en zie de Christus voor u; Hij die bloedt om uw zonden te bedekken. Hij, die het gericht Gods over de zonde droeg; Hij die de zonde uitdelgt. Andere religies kunnen niet overweg met deze onvoorstelbare belofte van verlossing. Moslims zeggen dat Mohammed de 'grootste profeet' is. Mensenkinderen, hoort! Waarom spreken wij in de christelijke theologie van de moederbelofte bij het lezen van Genesis 3:14 en 15? Een profeet is niet genoeg, hoe groot hij ook kan zijn. Een profeet is niet in staat noch gemachtigd verlossing te bewerkstelligen. God wist het: de Messias móést komen, de Zaligmaker; Iemand, die bereid is de toorn over zonde te dragen en verzoening te brengen tussen God en de mens. Zie hier, de Christus, het heilige Lam Gods. Hij kocht met Zijn bloed ons eeuwig leven en daarom is niemand groter dan HIJ!

Het christelijk geloof is geen religie, maar een levensstijl die gegrond is op het geloof in Jezus Christus. Christen zijn betekent Christus volgen.

Het leven van de christen speelt zich af in het hier en nu, gericht op het dáár en dán. Wij leven in deze eeuw, de eeuw der vergankelijkheid, en zijn op weg naar het Nieuwe Jeruzalem, daar waar we eeuwig met Hem zullen zijn. Vergeet nooit dat deze eeuw de pelgrimstocht van de christen is. Heb altijd, bij alles wat u doet, bij alles wat u zegt, bij alles wat u denkt en bij alles wat u doormaakt, dat beeld voor ogen. Zie in een vergezicht het Koninkrijk Gods en aanschouw in het centrum Hem, uw Heer, Die u door alle omstandigheden, er veilig heen zal leiden.

Er is een verschil tussen het uitzien naar de dood en het uitzien naar Christus. Voor een christen is de dood geen vriend die omhelsd moet worden, maar een overwonnen vijand. Dankzij het werk van Jezus Christus op Golgotha is de dood voor de gelovige niet de deur naar de eeuwige duisternis, maar het moment dat hij Degene zal aanschouwen Die het eeuwige heil verworven heeft.

Ik geloof honderd procent in de absolute soevereiniteit van God. Er zullen vele worstelingen zijn met kwaad en lijden, maar het is kostbaar te weten dat de HEERE over alles heerst. Daarom koester ik het boek Openbaring. Alles wat plaatsvindt, gebeurt onder de regering en de macht van Gods eeuwige raadsbesluiten.

Er is een perfecte tijd voor het leven onder de zon. God stelt de grenzen; mijn geboortedag en mijn sterfdag. Alles wat de christen - vanaf de wedergeboorte - tussen deze twee momenten onderneemt, zal gericht zijn op Gods eer. Hoe zit dat dan met een goddeloos persoon? Wat met diens tijd van leven onder de zon? Het kan enkel bestempeld worden als een verspild leven.

Er zijn twee lijnen in de verlossing: Gods lijn en de lijn van een persoon. Enerzijds is daar de Christus, Die betaalt voor de zonden der gehele wereld - anderzijds is er het wonder van de wedergeboorte, waarbij de mens afstand doet van diens zonden en afgoden, om zich tot God te keren. Zo is ín Christus het heil tot stand gebracht, en wordt het heil in de persoon door de wedergeboorte uitgewerkt.

De mens zal nooit in staat zijn zelf volmaakte vrede, gerechtigheid en schoonheid op deze planeet te realiseren. Er rust een vloek op deze aardbodem - ze is door Gods bevel overgeleverd aan de vergankelijkheid. Het moet voor ons genoeg zijn te weten dat de Bijbel zegt dat het Nieuwe Jeruzalem zal nederdalen, bij God Zelf vandaan. Geen mensenhand is hiertoe in staat.

Rampspoed en onheil dragen altijd Gods roepstem in zich: 'Bekeert u, keert u weder tot Mij, anders zult gij evenzo vergaan!'

We mogen nooit de gedachte koesteren dat de zonde na het volbrachte heilswerk van Christus gemakkelijker benaderd kan worden. Gedenk dat de openbaring van Christus de meest verheven openbaring in de wereldgeschiedenis is geweest; wie tegen deze majestueuze heerlijkheid blijft zondigen, zal geen enkel excuus hebben.

Wat is het altijd toch weer vreemd om mensen een eigenaardige vorm van Bijbelgebruik te zien hanteren. Lezen ze een stuk over de beheersing van de tong, dan is die tekst voor ome Piet, bij de vermaning 'gaat heen en zondigt niet meer' denkt men aan tante Annette en wanneer Judas voorbijkomt, wordt al snel naar broer Karel gewezen. Aan welke eisen moet een Bijbeltekst voldoen om het op uzelf toe te kunnen passen?!

Verwacht God!

De beloning van het eeuwige leven is God Zelf.

God Zélf is ons Hoogste Goed.

Op de Oordeelsdag is de vraag niet of je in dit leven status hebt, maar of je de Zoon hebt.
